WhiteCeil ceiling planks: a practical, hygienic ceiling solution

At Hycom we talk a lot about walls and floors, but did you know a significant number of our projects involve ceilings too?  There are several different types of hygienic ceilings, but here we’re going to take a look at WhiteCeil planks, and discuss what makes them a practical choice for commercial environments where hygiene, durability and ease of installation matter.

What are WhiteCeil ceiling planks?

Hycom WhiteCeil is a lightweight PVC ceiling system designed to provide a durable, washable and hygienic finish. The 250mm-wide planks feature a honeycomb structure and a tight tongue-and-groove fitting. This creates a neat and easy-to-maintain ceiling surface.

Available in 3m and 4m lengths, WhiteCeil is designed for straightforward installation, which helps keep projects moving.

Key benefits of WhiteCeil

  • Fire rated: Class 1 fire rated, making it a practical option for projects where fire performance is an important consideration. It is important to note here what Class 1 fire rating means. It does not mean 100% fireproof. It means the material limits how fast a flame spreads across its surface.

  • Hygienic and washable: The surface is easy-to-clean and won’t let water through, helping to maintain hygienic conditions.

  • Quick and straightforward to install: Lightweight planks and a simple tongue-and-groove system make it an easy installation.

  • Long-lasting: With a life expectancy of 25 years, WhiteCeil offers a durable, viable and good value ceiling solution.

  • Food safety approved: Suitable for environments where food safety requirements are a consideration.

  • Flexible design: The system can be built to create lighting and access hatches, helping to meet the practical requirements of commercial spaces.

Where is WhiteCeil best used?

WhiteCeil is particularly well suited to commercial environments where a hygienic, easy-to-clean ceiling is required, including food preparation areas and other hygiene-conscious facilities.

It is an excellent option for projects where installation speed, cost-effectiveness and straightforward maintenance are priorities.

However, if regular access to the ceiling void is required for servicing equipment or accessing building services, a wipeable grid ceiling may be a more suitable alternative.

How to fix your ceiling

1. Create a flat ceiling surface with boards, or batons spaced at 400mm centres. Prepare and fix Part A of your Perimeter Trim.

2. Measure your ceiling allowing 10mm for joining trim if applicable and marking or cutting for lights or fixings. Next screwfix the female tongue of the first plank in position along it's length at 400mm centres. We recommend 13mm self-drilling water head screws or similar, but please assess the specifics of your install.

3. Push fit the next plank in sequence into place. Use a piece of soft wood or similar with a soft mallet to gently close the groove to it's zero shadow point, and then screwfix as in 2.

4. Continue 3 until finished, then use the soft mallet to fix Part B of your Perimeter Trim and then the same to any Joining Trims. Seal as appropriate.
