From Apprentice to Office Manager

Jessica joined Hycom in 2020 on an apprenticeship in Level 3 Business Administration. During the thick of the global Coronavirus pandemic, this wasn't the easiest time to be starting out in the world of work, but it hasn't affected her progression one bit.

In 2021 Jess successfully completed her apprenticeship. Her position now stands permanent as Hycom’s Office Manager and Marketing Executive. Since finishing her apprenticeship, Jess has taken on more responsibilities and gained a further qualification. Described by one customer as “brilliant and so helpful”, Jess continually adds value to the business, demonstrating a high level of competency and real commitment to her role.

Jessica completed her apprenticeship with the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Group Training Association. She was awarded the 2021 runner-up Apprentice of the Year. At the same time, Hycom won Employer of the Year, which was hugely proud moment for Managing Director, Gavin Flynn.

We caught up with Jessica to see how she's finding the permanent position so far....

How  have you found the transition from being an apprentice to a permanent Hycom employee?

The transition was quite straightforward as I was already aware of a lot of my new job role having worked at the company for a year doing my apprenticeship. That's one of the benefits of entering work this way...it's a gradual process and you don't feel like you've suddenly landed in a role or place that you don't know.

Do you feel like the apprenticeship contributed to helping you work to the best of your ability in your permanent role?

Yes, it gave me a wide array of knowledge, so I knew about every part of the company including general business terms, accounting and dealing with stakeholders. Having an understanding of all parts of the company has made my permanent role easier, as I understand how the processes work, and what the other departments in the company do.

How has your role developed since completing your qualification?

Initially I was taken on to do sales and project administration. I am now working as Office Manager so I have more responsibility. I am also involved in a wider range of tasks, such as heading up product sales from the office and and marketing initiatives. The company is growing and I'm growing alongside it.

Will you be continuing your education?

I have already completed an office management qualification with The Open Study College. I'd be more than happy to continue doing courses in order to expand my knowledge and capabilities.

What advice can you offer to someone who is considering doing an apprenticeship?

I'd say go for it! It is a brilliant way to gain experience, whilst also earning money, and you can learn more skills doing a year's apprenticeship than in other forms of education. It gives you the best of both worlds.
