Choosing Adhesives for Altro Hygienic Wall Cladding and Vinyl Flooring

There are several adhesives available on the market for hygienic wall and floor installations, however, not all of them are suitable for every product and environment. Some are better for use in demanding environments like kitchens, hospitals, and food processing facilities. Others don’t provide full coverage and are better suited to smaller areas like splashbacks. Using the correct adhesive is important to ensure a strong, durable bond that, where applicable, can withstand moisture, cleaning chemicals, and daily wear. In this guide, we’ll break down the common types of Altro adhesives we recommend and supply to customers.

Quick Reference Guide:

Hygienic Wall Cladding Adhesives

1. AltroFix W139 (Two-Part Polyurethane)

Why use it: Provides a strong, water- and chemical-resistant bond.

Best for: Full sheets, such as Altro Whiterock, in high-hygiene areas like hospitals, kitchens, and wet rooms.

Sizes/quantities: Available in two sizes: 1) a 6.5kg tub which covers a 2.5m sheet and 2) a 8kg tub which covers a 3m sheet. We recommend using one tub per sheet to ensure full coverage.

Mixing & application: Requires mixing before use; walls must be clean, dry, and free from dust for optimal adhesion. Apply with a square notched trowel.

Important Health & Safety tip: Contains diisocyanates which can be damaging to health when not handled correctly. Anyone who uses this professionally is required by law to undertake training. More information here https://www.hycom.co.uk/industry-leaders/adhesives-training.html

2. AltroFix MP600 (One-Part Acrylic)

Why use it: A general purpose, fast curing multipurpose MS-Polymer sealant/adhesive that is diisocyanate free. Can also be used with floors.

Best for: Trims, splashbacks or small areas of sheets where full chemical/moisture resistance isn’t critical.

Sizes/quantities: Available in 290ml tubes which can be applied with a gun.

Technical tip: Water-based adhesive with simple application; not recommended for areas with constant immersion because it does not provide full coverage.

Vinyl Flooring Adhesives

1. AltroFix 19 Plus (Two-Part Polyurethane)

Why use it: Exceptional water resistance and durability, ideal for heavy-duty or wet areas.

Best for: Altro safety flooring in commercial kitchens, bathrooms, and wet rooms.

Sizes/quantities: Available in 1.5kg tubs (6-7m2 coverage), 3kg tubs (12-14m2 coverage) and 6kg tubs (24-24m2 coverage).

Mixing & application: Requires mixing before use; floors must be clean, dry, and free from dust for optimal adhesion. Apply with a square notched trowel.

Health & safety tip: Contains diisocyanates which can be damaging to health when not handled correctly. Anyone who uses this professionally is required by law to undertake training. More information here https://www.hycom.co.uk/industry-leaders/adhesives-training.html

2. AltroFix 15 (One-Part, Coloured Acrylic)

Why use it: Easy-to-use, high-tack adhesive suitable for dry areas.

Best for: Altro vinyl flooring in offices, schools, and other dry environments.

Sizes/quantities: Available in 12kg containers which will cover approximately 35-40m2.

Technical tip: Apply with a 1.5mm x 5mm notched trowel; curing time varies depending on thickness and ambient conditions.

3. AltroMastic 100 (Sealant/Gap Filler)

Why use it: A colourful sealant for edges and finishing details. Ideal for where the flooring abuts edges, skirtings and wall surfaces etc. One of the largest mastic colour ranges on the market.

Best for: Completing a professional, hygienic finish in Altro vinyl installations.

Sizes/quantities: Available in 290ml tubes which can be applied with a gun. Covers 40 linear metres at a 3mm bead.

Technical note: Does NOT replace the hot welded joint of the flooring system.

Tips for Successful Installation

Surface Preparation: Ensure walls and floors are clean, dry, and level to maximise adhesion.

Environment Matters: Use two-part polyurethanes in wet or hygiene-critical areas; acrylic adhesives are suitable for dry environments.

Safety First: PPE is essential for solvent- or diisocyanate-based adhesives. Follow UK regulations for training where required.

Using the correct Altro adhesive ensures your installation is strong, hygienic, and long-lasting, whether it’s wall cladding in a food prep area or vinyl flooring in a high-traffic corridor.
