Hygienic design for Mental Health

When designing behavioural and mental health facilities, it’s important to create spaces that support healing and treatment, whilst also keeping patients, visitors, and staff safe and secure. But recent research shows that it’s not just about safety and hygiene. Spaces that feel more familiar, homely, and welcoming can play a crucial role in supporting wellbeing and recovery.

Creating an environment that echoes the warmth and comfort of a residential space, without compromising safety and hygiene is key. Soft, thoughtful design touches can make a big difference in helping patients feel more grounded and at ease.

Today we’re seeing a shift away from cold and clinical interiors. Instead, mental health facilities are embracing brighter, more uplifting colours and finishes that feel more personal and less institutional. This shift in approach makes the healing process feel less isolating.

Research on the effects of colour on people is playing a big part in the design of healthcare settings. Studies are showing that colour has a profound impact on our emotions and behaviour. As a result, the choice of colour is becoming not just about aesthetics. Colour influences perceptions of cleanliness, mood, and even efficiency. Understanding how colour affects feelings can help create environments that are not only visually appealing but also support well-being and hygiene.

Biophilic design principles, such as bringing the outdoors in, can also offer calming, restorative effects for people of all ages. Natural textures, views of nature, and access to daylight all contribute to a more peaceful atmosphere that encourages positive outcomes.

Some elements include:

  • Natural finishes, like wood and stone effects, that add warmth and texture
  • Soothing, calming colour palettes
  • Using different light reflectance values (LRVs) to help with wayfinding and safety
  • Maximising light, access to outdoor views, and safe, secure outdoor areas
  • Incorporating nature-themed imagery and scenes
  • Open, flowing floor plans that promote a sense of space and freedom

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, we've curated mood boards highlighting a range of Altro's walls and flooring solutions. Each board shows how thoughtful design can help create environments that truly support the needs of their users.
